| WHAT IS THE BLASPHEMY OF THE HOLY SPIRIT?
DOES IT PROVE THAT THE HOLY SPIRIT IS A THIRD BEING? Luke 12:10 And whosoever shall speak a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but unto him that blasphemeth against the Holy Ghost it shall not be forgiven. Mark 3:28-30 Verily I say unto you, All sins shall be forgiven unto the sons of men, and blasphemies wherewith soever they shall blaspheme: But he that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost hath never forgiveness, but is in danger of eternal damnation: Because they said, He hath an unclean spirit. Many people wonder what the blasphemy of the holy Spirit, which Christ said was a sin unpardonable, is. Others use these verses to teach that the Spirit is a third being. Brother Mickey of New Jersey gave the following response to such questions and I think it is so plain that anyone can understand it. Mickey responds: Why is it that "all manner of sin and blasphemy will be forgiven unto men", but not the blasphemy against the Holy Spirit? Why is this the "unpardonable" sin that God cannot forgive? Is Jesus saying here that this unpardonable sin involves the blaspheming of what many deem as the "third person of the Godhead", the third in the divine chain of command? What makes "God the Spirit" different than the other two in that any other sin against them can be forgiven, but against this third Person, no sin can be forgiven? Is "God the Spirit" holier than the Father and Son? If that's so, then all three cannot be "co-equal". Is it that "God the Spirit" is more emotionally sensitive than the other the Father and Son and thus is unforgiving when it comes to sinning against Him because of a lower tolerance level? If that's so, then they don't share the same divine nature and character. This, in actual fact, would render "God the Spirit" as INFERIOR to the Father and Son, which again would put the lie to their being "co-equal". If "God the Spirit" is so different from the Father and the Son, then they cannot be "one" as is taught by Trinitarians. So, there's a big problem here - if one is going to subscribe to the notion that there are three separate and individual deities which compose the one Godhead. Because, clearly, the three Gods of the Tritheists are NOT behaving as ONE and one of them won't forgive blasphemy and the other two will. It appears that "God the Spirit" is in a class all by Himself, huh? Of course, NONE of the above is true. Simply because there is no such thing as "God the Spirit". You may search the Bible 'till cows eat steak and donkeys fly and you will NEVER find any reference at all to a deity named "God the Spirit". The testimony of the Scriptures regarding the Comforter is the Comforter is the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of Truth, "which proceedeth from the Father". The Holy Spirit is NOT a separate God in a threesome of deities. No! The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of God, the "Spirit of your Father". It proceeds from the very being of God the Father. It is His Spirit, is omnipresent, omnipotent Spirit. God's Son is filled with God's Spirit, His being, His power, His mind. God's Spirit proceeds from Him and flows through His Son making both of them, the Father and the Son, personally omnipresent. It is the ONLY agency that God has in which He can reach the hearts and minds of sinful man. If man blasphemes or attributes God's holy power, influence, and personal presence as the power and influence of Satan, then this is what constitutes the unpardonable sin, this is the sin against God's Spirit which He cannot forgive. Not because God is unforgiving. But because when men refuse to respond to the drawing of God's Spirit and attribute it to an evil power, they have cut of the only means that God has that He can personally communicate with the heart of man. Once man turns his ear away from the pleadings of God's Spirit, that man is left to himself, his own devices, and for his own sin to ultimately devour him. Jesus promised us that He would never leave us or forsake us, right? He said that He would take residence in our hearts, right? How do you think He accomplishes this? He can't do it bodily, he's in the heavenly sanctuary as our High Priest and can't be everywhere present in bodily form. But through the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of God the Father which He has poured onto His Son, He comes and dwells within us and is our Comforter and our guide and our ever-present Friend. When we reject the Holy Spirit, we are indeed rejecting Christ. For "the Lord IS that Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty." (2 Corinthians 3:17) No matter what sin a man can commit,as long as they don't do what the Jews did in the time of Christ, and that is to attribute His power to that of the devil, which constitutes the unpardonable sin and the blaspheming of the Holy Spirit through which Christ displayed the power of God, they can be forgiven. This is what Jesus was saying. He wasn't pointing to another deity apart from Himself in His talks concerning the Holy Spirit. Jesus promised the Comforter. He said that He would not leave us comfortless, but emphatically stated "I WILL COME TO YOU." HE, Jesus, is the Comforter. He is the Truth and possesses the "Spirit of Truth" given unto Him by His Father. The Holy Spirit is NOT a separate God as the Tritheists maintain. Neither is God's Holy Spirit a split-off clone of Christ as some false prophets teach. Rather the Holy Spirit is simply what Jesus said of it, it is the "Spirit of your Father". So plain, eh?
