The Faith of Devils

Justification by Grace alone through faith alone is one of the MOST important issues in Christianity today. It stretches across denominational lines and cuts to the quick of all doctrines and theologies. The subject of Justification MUST be rightly taught, to have any foundation at all in this age of Apostasy and error. Once this truth is accepted then other truths can be built upon; But without this Rock, you’re building upon the shifting sands of man made philosophy and not upon Christ the Lord.

As many of you know there is a mass movement of Truth Seeking Christians, separating themselves from the errors of the Apostate Roman Church. They are laying aside the traditions and the weights that hinge only on the words of man; and are coming back to the bible and out of Babylon. This subject is the first threshold in the escape from the harlot. No matter what other abominations you give up, or what truths you accept, if you do not understand the doctrine of Justification, then all is for naught. So with all sincerity, I offer this sermon.

EPHESIANS 2:8-9 "For by Grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves; It is the gift of God. Not of works lest any man should boast"

Here the Apostle Paul tells us that we are saved by grace through faith, and it is not of works. He tells us that salvation is a gift of GOD, and we receive this gift of GOD by faith. You do not deserve it, you cannot earn it, but you merely receive it by faith.

If I say, “Brother Mike, this bible here is a gift from me to you.” But brother Mike answers, “No, I will not have it unless I can pay you something for it”. Then Brother Mike is trying to turn my gift in to a purchase. The moment you attempt to offer something in return for a gift, that gift becomes a purchase, and the Grace of GOD cannot be purchased.

Too many people, instead of accepting the gift of salvation simply by faith, have attempted to ‘earn’ the grace of God. And God says NO, you cannot earn it, you cannot give me anything for it. You will receive it as a gift or you cannot have it.

Romans 6:23   For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

If you gain the Kingdom of Heaven you will do so by receiving the gift by faith alone, or you will not be there. Yet men go through life trying to find a way to earn salvation.

“I am a good person” Say they, “I try to help people. I try to do good deeds every day”. Yet all the self-righteousness in the world cannot save you. All the good deeds that one can muster cannot  save a soul from hell.

Salvation is all about receiving a gift. You receive the gift of God’s Son, which he gave because he so loved the world (John 3:16). And you lay hold of this gift simply by faith.

1 Peter 1:5   Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

Some men may say yes, “We are initially saved by faith, but once you are saved you must keep yourself saved by your works”. But I warn you brethren all your strength, all your might, all your power, and all your mental capabilities cannot keep you saved for one second.

The Christian is kept the bible says by the power of GOD. It is the Spirit of GOD, the indwelling of Christ Jesus that keeps you saved. If it was up to human powers to keep us, there would not be a single man saved.

How do we lay hold on this power that keeps us saved? The same way that we laid hold of salvation initially, “THROUGH FAITH”. You receive Christ by faith, and you abide in Christ by faith. As long as you keep the faith you will be kept by the power of GOD.

Then how do men fall away? The bible says it is through a heart of unbelief that they depart from the living God (Hebrews 3:12), and it warns that we must keep our faith, our confidence in Christ to the end to inherit the Kingdom of God (Hebrews 3:6,14 and Matthew 24:13).

The Lord Jesus Christ has warned us of a deceiving type of Faith, and he said that many would have it. He told that in that day of Judgment that many would come to him crying “Lord, Lord” and yet he would have to say “Depart from me for I never knew you”. They had a faith that could cry “Lord”, but not a faith that “Could do the will of his Father in heaven”. They had a faith that would speak in his name, but not a faith that could deliver them from a world of iniquity. It is this powerless faith that James wrote of.

James 2:17-20  Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.
Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works. Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble. But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?

Some men will read this and say that James has contradicted Paul, but he certainly did not. James is not saying that works save us, but he is teaching us that a faith that does not produce works is dead, and those who have such a faith are not saved.

And this is the very teaching of Paul who said that the saved are created to perform good works not sporadically but that we should walk there in.  Ephesians 2:10  For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

The faith that does not produce works is dead and it is the faith of devils.

I will illustrate to you how works do not save, but prove that a person is saved or not. A apple tree in the winter looks rather dead, and from just looking it is hard to tell a dead tree from a living tree. But we realize that its source of life is the root. If there is life in the root, then it is a living tree even if it has no leaves and no fruits. The apples do not give it life, but the root is the source of life.

Now when spring comes and it does not sprout leaves and it doesn’t blossom, and it produces no fruits; then you can say “It is dead”. The absence of the apples and the blossoms did not make it dead, but it was proof that it is dead.

In Salvation Jesus Christ is the root, he is the source of our life; and if we are joined to him then that life will become evident in us, and we shall bear fruit. You cannot be joined to Christ and be fruitless. Yet the fruit does not save us, but they prove that we are saved. The works is the evidence.

If it is by our works that we can tell if we are of the faith, then we should know what type of works to look for in ourselves. The Bible teaches us to examine ourselves and to see if we are in the faith (2nd Corinthians 13:5). It is sad when men die lost, knowing that they have rejected Christ; it is even sadder for men to die lost when they think they are bound for eternal life. And now I would like to look at some works that are evident in a true believer.

#1. REPENTANCE --Matthew 3:8  Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance:

It is wrong to tell a sinner who is seeking Christ that he must repent before he can receive him; it is impossible to turn from sin in our hearts without Christ. Yet is right to say that it is impossible for a man to be SAVED and unrepentant. Faith and repentance is born at ONCE in a believer.

BEWARE of your faith, if you say you have trusted in Christ and yet you have never repented of your sins. If you say you are saved, and you do not hate the sins that you once loved, and if you do not have a hearts desire to rid yourself of these things, then you know nothing about saving faith. True faith puts a distance between us and sin.  He that loves his sin, or is not broken over his sin, or speaks lightly of sin has the faith of devils.

True faith purges the soul. The bible says he that ‘has this hope purifies himself even as he is pure’ (1 John 3:3). The “New Man”, “The New Creation” that one becomes when he trusts in Christ seeks after the sin that besets him, as if it was a traitor that lurks within his nature. Though a believer is not perfect, true faith will cause him to drift toward perfection, and it will make him more and more Christ like. Judge yourselves, my hearers. Have you brought forth the fruits of repentance? If not, your faith without them is dead.

#2. Works that are done in secrete - Matthew 6:6  But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.

You may go to Church every Sabbath or Sunday, you may speak about the Lord when there is a crowd. But how are you when you are alone? The works that are done in secrete reveal what faith that you have. I could easily preach about the sins that you think are secrete, and I will say of that subject, “Be sure that they will find you out”, God sees every action, every deed, and every thought. You may deceive man, but Him you will not deceive.

But what I want us to do is examine ourselves and see if we have works of piety when we are alone. Can a man honestly say, “I believe that Christ has died for me and I hope to be in his kingdom”, yet never pray in private?
Can a man say that he is a Servant of GOD, and yet never read the Word of God?
Can a man be saved when he has no regard in his heart for his GOD, and does not hold communion with Christ when he is alone? Then how can faith dwell in such a man?

If you say it is possible, then you must believe it is possible for a person to be alive when he does not breathe. It is foolhardy to say that a man is a believer with living faith who does not draw near to God in prayer, that does not love his word, that does not live under the awe and fear of the Most High God who is ever present. Judge yourselves, for there is no life in such a faith.

#3. WORKS OF OBEDIENCE – Luke 6:46  And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?

When a man trusts in Jesus, he accepts Jesus as his Master. He says, "What would you have me to do?” I am not going to speak of those who are ignorant of God’s will, who shall be beaten with a few stripes. But those who KNOW, and yet who live in wilful rebellion.
Now a duty may be neglected, and yet a man may be saved; but a duty persistently and wilfully neglected will be a leak that will sink your ship. And what is the whole duty of man? It is to fear GOD and to keep his Commandments.

When you accept Christ as Lord and Savior, you do not say, “I will make you my Lord, but I will not obey you on this subject”, no you will surrender your whole heart to Christ or none at all.

If you draw a line and say, I will obey you here, but not there, then you are not a servant, but you remain your own master. A heart that has accepted Christ as Master, will say, “None of your commandments are grievous Lord, What would you have me to do?”

Do you ever ask yourselves what would Christ have you to do? or do you live habitually in the neglect of Christ's law and will? Do you go to places where Christ would not meet you, and where you would not like to meet with him? Do you watch shows that you would not watch with Christ? Do you practice customs that you know Christ would never approve?

Living Faith is an obedient faith. Disobedience is a sure mark of a demonic faith.

#4. TRUE FAITH SEPARATES YOU – 2 Corinthians 6:17  Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you,

Living faith will cause a separation between man and the world. The world will turn against the Christian, and the Christian will turn against the world. If any man loves the world, then it is certain that the love of the Father does not dwell in him.

When a man believes in Jesus, he is not what he was, but all things become new. And your old friends should notice immediately that you do not do the things you once did.

Jesus said, “Ye are not of the world, EVEN AS I am not of the world." Now Christ was not a monk who closed himself off from all people; he ate and drank as other men, and he mingled with mankind. But his presence among men was as an Angel among sinners. You knew at once that he was not of their mold, nor of their spirit. He was “separate from sinners”.  Now such will the believer be if his faith be genuine.

If a sinner comes to you Christian and asks you to indulge in a sin, then that is a mark against you; for you should have went to him and asked him to indulge in Christ. But if that sinner comes a second time a asking, then that is a sure sign that you are not walking as you should. If we are of the world, then expect to be doomed with the world when the Lord Jesus Christ returns. If you find your pleasure with the world, you shall meet your condemnation with the world; if with the world you live, with the world you shall die.

Where there is no separation there is no grace. If we are conformed to this world, how dare we talk about grace being in our souls; and if there be no distinguishing difference between us and the world, what vanity it is, what trifling, what hypocrisy, what a delusion for us to come to the Lord's table, talking about being the Lord's sons, when we are none of his? Faith without the works which places the difference between a believer and a sinner is a dead, devilish faith. And I would not give you a dime for it. I would not have it if you attempted to pay me to receive it.

5. TRUE FAITH PLACES LOVE IN YOUR HEART– John 13:35  By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.

A faith that does not cause you to love is a worthless faith. The bible says he that loveth not is not of GOD (1st John 4:20). If you do not love your brothers and sisters, then you are still of that ‘wicked one’. The first evident fruit of conversion is love.

When you are saved you will have love for your lost neighbor. The love of CHRIST shall constrain you. The person with true faith will endeavor to share the knowledge of Christ with others. He longs to win souls to the kingdom. He wants to see the church grow and prosper. If your faith does not show itself in direct deeds of Christian service, then it is a dead faith.

There is a Jetliner, carrying a load of passengers, and something has happened to the pilot and his mate.  They are found unconscious and they cannot be awakened. The plane is drifting off course and they are headed for sure disaster.  The passengers are frantic, and they are crying for help, and then a voice comes over the radio.

And says, “I am Captain Joshua, If you trust me, and me alone, I will cause the aircraft to land safely and there will be no lost of life. Do you believe in me?” And the passengers answer “YES, we believe in you”. And the voice says okay, Adam sit down in the pilot’s seat and pull back on the throttle. Yet Adam doesn’t move.

The other passengers begin to ask, “Adam, didn’t you hear him?” Why yes I heard him. “What is wrong then Adam, Don’t you trust Pilot Joshua”? “Why yes, I trust him, I trust him to land the plane safely”.

Then the voice from the intercom speaks again, “Adam sit down and pull the throttle back”. Yet Adam doesn’t move. The voice speaks again, “Adam, don’t you trust me?” And Adam answers yes, I trust that you shall land this plane safely. And I shall not do anything. And then just seconds later the plane crashes and burns destroying all that was on it. Now the question is did Adam have true faith or was it a mocking faith?

If he had true faith, then he would have proved his faith by his works. His faith would had been made perfect and the plane would had been saved. I call upon every man here to do what Christ bids him. Oh! I charge you by your soul's salvation neglect nothing Christ commands, however trivial it may seem to your reason. Whatever he says to you, do it. For only "They that trust in him shall be saved."

And if you are here lost this day, I ask you to trust and obey Christ. He calls to you “COME”, and he promises that if you will come he will save you and you will not be turned away. If you say you believe in Christ, yet you have not received him in your heart, then you have the faith of devils, and you do not want to leave this world with a faith that is fit for hell do you?
