How, when, where and Why? The Truth about Hell.

It will be helpful if you first read our studies on death, before moving onto the subject of hell

When will the wicked be cast into hell fire?  Matthew 13:40-42 “As therefore the tares are gathered and burned in the fire; so shall it be IN THE END OF THE WORLD. The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity; and shall cast them into a furnace of fire; there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth”.

What event takes place just prior to the wicked being cast into the fire? Revelation 20:11-15 “I saw a great white throne and him that sat on it….And I saw the dead small and great stand before God and the books were opened… and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books”.

Are the wicked ‘punished’ before judgment day or are they reserved?

2nd Peter 2:9
“The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptation, and to RESERVE the unjust onto the day of judgment to be punished”.

Job 21:30 “The wicked is reserved to the day of destruction? They shall be brought forth to the day of wrath”.

You mean the wicked will be resurrected and have bodies when they are cast into the fire? Matthew 5:30 “If thy right hand offend thee, cut if off and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell”

Matthew 10:28 “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul; but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in Hell”  also see Revelation 20:5-6

Where will the wicked receive their recompense? Proverbs 11:31 “Behold the righteous shall be recompensed in the earth; much more the wicked and the sinner”.

Is the earth really reserved unto Judgment day?
2nd Peter 3:7
“But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition (destruction) of ungodly men”

How can the earth fit the description of a ‘lake of fire’? 2nd Peter 3:10 “But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up”

It’s preparation

Matthew 25:41  Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:

Revelation 19:20  And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone.

Jude 1:13  Raging waves of the sea, foaming out their own shame; wandering stars, to whom is reserved the blackness of darkness for ever.

Hell is a place of total darkness, cut off from the light of God’s continence and love. It is also place where you can make reservations. When you live in sin, you make your reservations to one day to live in hell.

Everlasting Fire

Matthew 18:8  Wherefore if thy hand or thy foot offend thee [tempts you to sin], cut them off, and cast them from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life halt or maimed, rather than having two hands or two feet to be cast into everlasting fire.

Everlasting Shame and Contempt

Daniel 12:2  And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.

Everlasting Separation.

2 Thessalonians 1:9  Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power;

Weeping and Gnashing of Teeth.

Matthew 22:13  Then said the king to the servants, Bind him hand and foot, and take him away, and cast him into outer darkness; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Luke 16:24  And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.

Revelation 20:10  And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

Satan and his angels. – Matthew 25:41

Those who do Unrighteousness — 1st Corinthians 6:9

Those who do not obey the truth – Romans 2:8

The fearful, unbelieving, the abominable, the murderers, whoremongers [fornicators, adulterers, homosexuals..etc], sorcerers [drug abusers/dealers], idolators, and all liars – Revelation 21:8

Those who work abominations – Revelation 21:27

The Hypocrites and those who turn from following Christ – Matthew 24:48-51

The Foolish Virgins – Matthew 25:7-12

Those who thought they were saved but wasn’t - Matthew 7:23

Luke 16:23-31  And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.  And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.  But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented.  And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence.  Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father’s house:  For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment.  Abraham saith unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.  And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent.  And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.

Things to notice from these Scriptures:

A. The Rich man went to hell not because he was rich, but because he was wicked. Lazarus escaped hell not because he was poor, but because he trusted in God, which the name Lazarus implies.

B. The Rich man could not escape the fires of hell, there was no crossing the gulf that was fixed. There is no salvation after death.

C. The Rich man’s tongue was on fire: The Bible says this about the wicked tongue:

James 3:6  And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell.

It should make us think before we lie, cuss, gossip, and revile. One day that tongue we use to torment the ears of God and men shall torment us in the flame.

D. You should warn your people not to go to hell NOW while you have a chance. Wouldn’t it be awful if you ended up in hell and then saw your loved ones cast in there with you? To see your son or daughter wading through the flames to you? What do you think they would say to you? “Hi, mom, its good to see ya? Thanks for raising me up like you did, for teaching all the ways of the world, and setting that good worldly example before me?” Of course not! There is no niceness in hell, they would probably say, “WHY didn’t you warn me of this place? Why didn’t you show me the right way? Why didn’t you raise me up in the way of holiness?” Their hearts will be filled with so much anger and bitterness they will probably gnaw on you with their teeth.

Just like the preacher who said he had a vision of hell once, and he saw a man running through fire and every so often he would stop and lift up someone out of fire and look at his face and then throw him back down; and run to the next person. Like he was searching for someone. A voice spoke to the preacher and said, “This is a man in hell, looking for the preacher who lied to him”.

Luke 16:30  And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent.

The rich man KNEW what it would take for his brethren to escape hell, it was something that he wasn’t willing to do. It is repentance. Jesus said: “Except you repent, you ALL shall likewise perish”.

Repentance from sin and faith in Christ is the only remedy for the fires of hell, it is the only way of escape. And please don’t deceive yourselves, if you are not willing to repent of your sins then your faith in Christ is not real faith, it is not saving faith. Those sins that you cling to now, if not expelled by repentance, shall one day eat your flesh like fire. They shall be like WORMS gnawing upon your bones, and chewing through your soul in the flames of hell.

As Jesus said “Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.” – Mark 9:44
