The pre-existence of Christ

We believe that Jesus Christ is the Divine Son of the Living GOD. Who was born before all creation, who emptied himself of his glory, and about 2000 years ago became a man. Who lived a perfect life, and died for the sins of the whole world, and was raised again the third day.

There are some in 'Christendom' today, who deny the divinity and pre-existence of Jesus Christ; I warn each of you that to deny these two things, is to deny the two essentials of faith! And to ignore the word of God.

In this study we will show that the bible in many places testifies to the preexistence of Christ. The first verse we wish to examine is John 1:1. Those who deny the Divinity and Pre-existence of Chrsit must come up with some wild explanations for John 1:1. For it is the BEDROCK verse that proves both the pre-existence and Divinity of our Lord. For example: Some have told me that the WORD was not a person, but simply the spoken word or a message from God, and that message lived inside the man named Jesus.

Let’s read these two verses and see if the Word means an impersonal message or if the Word is a Person.

John 1:1-2  In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God (Divine).  The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by HIM; and without HIM was not any thing made that was made.

John tells us that this word that was with GOD in the beginning of time is not an impersonal 'message', but it is a personal being, he is called HIM. God created all things by/through this person called the WORD. Also note that John is not saying that the "WORD" was a 'god', but he was God. He has the very nature of the one he was with. As we read further, and look at other studies concerning this issue, we will see that ALL things were created through Christ Jesus. This will place the origin of Christ before all creation. If he existed before creation, then he had to be of the Substance of GOD, since the Substance of GOD was the only substance in existence before creation. Truly Christ is of the same nature and substance of his Father. As any human possesses the same nature of his parents, and is from their substance.

Why is this person called the WORD? The word reveals the thoughts of ones heart. JESUS reveals the heart of the Father to us. He has always done that. He is the visible image, of the invisible God.

Did this person called the Word live inside a human, or did he become a human?

John 1:14  And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

John doesn't tell us that the WORD lived inside a human body. But that the WORD became flesh. This person called the WORD, truly became a man.

What did John say he did with this Word?

1John 1:1  That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life;

John says he saw the Word, he looked upon the word and with his hands he handled this person called the Word. You cannot handle and look upon an impersonal message.

Is this person that John handled still called the Word?

Rev 19:11-13  And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war. His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself. And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God.

What is this person called the “WORD” also called?

Rev 19:16  And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.

Who is this person? Rev 17:14  These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them: for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings: and they that are with him are called, and chosen, and faithful.

So we see Jesus is that Word that was with God from the beginning.

Where does God dwell?

Psalm 11:4  The LORD is in his holy temple, the LORD'S throne is in heaven: his eyes behold, his eyelids try, the children of men.

So if Jesus truly pre-existed and was with GOD as John 1:1 states, then he had to live in Heaven before he became a man.

Where did Jesus say he lived before?

John 3:13  And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven.

John 6:62   What and if ye shall see the Son of man ascend up where he was before?

Jesus said to be where he was before he would have to ascend up. The heavens are up aren’t they?

Did Jesus have to come down from heaven to be born as a man?

John 6:33  For the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world.

John 6:38  For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me

Does Jesus want us to believe that he was with God and that he came into the world?

John 16:27-30   The Father loves you because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God. I left the Father and came into the world. Again, as I've said, I'm going to leave the world and go back to the Father." His disciples said, "Now you're talking in plain words and not using examples. Now we know that you know everything. You don't need to wait for questions to be asked. Because of this, we believe that you have come from God."

Abraham lived over a thousand years before Jesus was born of Mary, did Jesus exist before Abraham was born?

John 8:56-59
Your father Abraham was pleased to see that my day was coming. He saw it and was happy." The Jews said to Jesus, "You're not even fifty years old. How could you have seen Abraham?" Jesus told them, "I can guarantee this truth: Before Abraham was ever born, I am."
Then some of the Jews picked up stones to throw at Jesus

Was Jesus there when Satan was first cast out of Heaven?

Luke 10:18  And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven.

Who was with the Children of Israel when they escaped the Egyptian bondage?

1Corinthians 10:2-4
And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea; And did all eat the same spiritual meat; And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ.

Who did the Children of Israel tempt when they sinned in the wilderness?

1Corinthians 10:9
Neither let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were destroyed of serpents.

So we see that Jesus was there when Abraham lived, and when Moses lived.

Who appeared to Joshua?
Joshua 5:13-15 ¶ And it came to pass, when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted up his eyes and looked, and, behold, there stood a man over against him with his sword drawn in his hand: and Joshua went unto him, and said unto him, Art thou for us, or for our adversaries? And he said, Nay; but as captain of the host of the LORD am I now come. And Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and did worship, and said unto him, What saith my lord unto his servant? And the captain of the LORD’S host said unto Joshua, Loose thy shoe from off thy foot; for the place whereon thou standest is holy. And Joshua did so.

This person was the one who lead the Angels of GOD into battle, and his very presence made the ground holy! He also accepted the worship of Joshua. My friends, this can only be ONE PERSON, the Divine Son of the living GOD! (This was not the Father For no man has seen the Father, and this was not a mere created angel, for they will not accept worship)

John 1:1 states that Jesus was with GOD in the beginning. Now we know that GOD does not have a beginning. So what is John referring to when he states in the beginning?

Genesis 1:1  In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

The beginning is speaking of the birth of our universe, when time, as we know it began.

Was someone with GOD when he created this world?

Genesis 1:26
And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

Yes, someone was with GOD, who also had the image of GOD, for he says “Our image/our likeness”.

2Corinthians 4:4
In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.

Who does the bible teach was with GOD during creation?

Ephesians 3:9
And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ:

God created all things THROUGH a person, that person is Jesus.

The bible teaches ever so clearly that Jesus Christ pre-existed as the Son of GOD, and shared in the glory and riches of GOD, but he emptied himself of this glory, and became a man, the poorest of the poor.

Philippians 2:5-8 Let the same disposition be in you which was in Christ Jesus. Although from the beginning He had the nature of God He did not reckon His equality with God a treasure to be tightly grasped. Nay, He stripped Himself of His glory, and took on Him the nature of a bondservant by becoming a man like other men. And being recognized as truly human, He humbled Himself and even stooped to die; yes, to die on a cross. (WEYMOUTH)

2 Corinthians 8:9  For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich.

What relationship does Jesus share with GOD?

John 3:16  For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

Was Jesus his Son before he came into the world?

John 3:17  For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

The bible teaches that GOD sent his SON into this world. To send your Son, you must first have a Son. And the bible declares that Jesus is the only Begotten Son of GOD. So if Jesus is the Son of GOD, and he existed with GOD at Creation, so when was he begotten?

Who was born before all creation.

Colossians 1:15-16
Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature (Born before all creation): (Because through)him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:

Here are some other translations of Colossians 1:15

15  Now Christ is the visible expression of the invisible God. He was born before creation began, (Phillips)

15  Who is the image of the unseen God coming into existence before all living things; (BBE)

The word Christ or Messiah means the Anointed. Was Jesus anointed?

Acts 10:38  How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.

When was Jesus first anointed?

Proverbs 8:23  I was set up (annointed, became Christ) from everlasting, from the beginning, or ever the earth was.

Now notice the term “Set up”, it is the Hebrew word naw-sak’ and it is of the Niphal stem, and it means anointed. Like you would anoint a king. Do you know what Messiah and Christ means? The anointed. It is translated this way in the Young’s Literal translation.

From the age I was anointed, from the first, From former states of the earth. (YLT)

When was Jesus born?

Proverbs 8:24-31
When there were no depths, I was brought forth (BORN); when there were no fountains abounding with water. Before the mountains were settled, before the hills was I brought forth (BORN): While as yet he had not made the earth, nor the fields, nor the highest part of the dust of the world.  When he prepared the heavens, I was there: when he set a compass upon the face of the depth: When he established the clouds above: when he strengthened the fountains of the deep: When he gave to the sea his decree, that the waters should not pass his commandment: when he appointed the foundations of the earth: Then I was by him, as one brought up (A master Builder) with him: and I was daily his delight, rejoicing always before him;  Rejoicing in the habitable part of his earth; and my delights were with the sons of men.

Does the bible teach that Jesus was begotten before GOD sent him into the world?

1John 4:9
In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him.

And GOD sent this Born SON (Born before Creation) To this world. And what did this gift of GOD do? It revealed the love of GOD for us. Remember Jesus told Nicodemus, this is how much GOD loves you, He loves you so much he sent his only begotten Son into the world.

I could go on and on with this, but the bible teaches clearly that Jesus Christ did pre-exist, as a person before the incarnation. This person was/is the only born Son of GOD.

Isn't the love of GOD for us wonderful? He sent his only Born Son; a Son that had been by his side since the beginning; who he loved immensely. He sent him to die for our sins. And he let his Son hang on the cross, and he let our sins separate them for the first time since eternity. And Jesus died a sinner’s death and lay in the grave for three days. WHAT A GOSPEL! What manner of love the Father has for us.

Surely this exposes the gospel of those who deny the pre-existance of Christ as being extremely SHALLOW! Their gospel sounds like this: God sent his impersonal word, to indwell a human body for 33 1/2 years. And at the end of the 331/2 years that human body died.

I'm sorry friends, but that isn't the gospel. To those who deny the pre-existence of Christ, I say Keep studying! God loves you and wants you to believe this truth about his Son.
